Description

This enchanting nativity scene is set in Peru's Amazon rain forest. Wearing traditional clothing, the Holy Family is portrayed as Shipibo people. Macaws, a toucan and an anaconda join jaguars, a tapir and a capybara to welcome baby Jesus. Erika Ulloa crafts the wooden box to house this retablo, or diorama and paints it in vivid colors. The figures are carefully modeled from clay and painted by hand.

First--there is no way to click on "no, this was not a gift."But it wasn't a gift. This is a beautiful piece, no question. But instead of the promised tapir, it has a very agitated, wild-eyed, cross-eyed chimpanzee. No doubt he's upset because he doesn't belong in a Brazilian rain forest--chimpanzees live only in Africa. Somewhere, in an African-themed Nativity, there must be a little tapir who is tired of explaining that he is not a baby elephant. I can cure the chimpanzee's crossed eyes and wild-eyed appearance--I have a tiny paintbrush. But I don't see how I can turn him into a tapir.

This retablo by Erika Ulloa is SO BEAUTIFUL. A Burst of color when the doors of the retablo are opened. All the animals & birds surrounding the Holy family are Magnificent!!!
